General Help

My Friends Advanced View:

The "My Friends" "Advanced View" page shows your network of friends.

This is more complex view of your network is broken into 3 components:

  1. Direct Friends: are those friends you invited yourself
  2. Indirect Friends You Trust: are those friends invited by others in your network which you trust indirectly
  3. Indirect Friends that Trust You: are those friends that trust you that others have invited

This page lets you edit the relationship distance (in some cases), exclude a friend from your network and delete friends (in some cases) from your network.

Friends Assets

Friends Assets is a feature of Gold Membership which lets you look only at a friend's list of assets. This is very useful as you do not need to wade through your complete list of network assets to find what your friend Jim has.

To access this function, click on your friends name in the list and you will be able to look through the asset tabs (or categories) and see only that friend's assets. How cool is that!

For more information see Friends Asset help

My Direct Friends List

This list is the list of friends that you have invited. This is also called your "Direct Friends" list.

You can invite friends using the "Invite Friends" button on the top menu just below the logo in CYNF HQ ( see Invite Friend help ).

The list shows the

  • first name and initial (if entered) of each person who has registered,
  • City/State and Zip/Postcode (if entered),
  • the relationship distance you set (see below)
  • the relationship distance set by them and
  • whether they are registered or not (ie. invited).

In addition to "Direct Friends" CYNF also keeps track of "Indirect Friends" or more commonly known as Friends' Friends or Friend of a Friend. ( For more information on "Indirect Friends" see Advanced View help )

Relationship Distance

Relationship distance is a measure of how much trust and how close your relationship is with your friend.

There are two relationship distances because not all relationships are weighted equally on both sides:

  1. Distance From: this is the relationship distance set by you and refers to the distance this friend is from you and is used in with the "Max Distance" on an asset on your "My Assets" page to determine whether your friend can see that asset or not.

For example: If you set a relationship distance of 2 to a friend and you set all your books to a "Max Distance" of 2 and all your games to a "Max Distance" of 1 then that friend will only see your books and will not see or be able to borrow the games.

Using the drop down box you can set the relationship distance as either 1, 2 or 3. In addition, you can also exclude that friend from your network (see below for more details)

  2. Distance To: this is the relationship distance that your friend set for you. This defines, in harmony with the settings he has made for his assets, what assets you can see of his.

    ----CYNFNote----
People enter define relationships different to each other as do they set different "Max Distances" on their assets.

For example, one person might have all of his friends at distance of 3, but put all assets in at a "Max Distance" of 3, meaning his friends can see all his assets. Whereas another person has set his friends up as a distance of 2 but puts all his assets in at a "Max Distance" of 1 meaning his friends can see nothing.

So please be careful how you view this information.

My Indirect Friends You Trust

These are friends of friends that by implication you trust.

Their relationship distances are calculated as the total of the distance from you to your friend and your friend to them. If there is more than one friend who trusts them then it is the lowest relationship total.

The effect of this is that if you have a friend James you entered at a distance of 2 and he invites a friend Harry who he puts in at a distance of 1 then James' distance to you is a total of 3. That is an indirect relationship can not be closer than the direct relationship related to it.

You can adjust the relationship distance with an Indirect Friend/s by using check box and "Create Relationship" button. When you do that you put them on your Direct Friends list with the distance you set.

My Friends that Trust You

These are friends of friends that trust you, either directly or indirectly.

You can adjust the relationship distance with an Indirect Friend/s by using check box and "Create Relationship" button. When you do that you put them on your Direct Friends list with the distance you set.

It is worth looking at this list often as good friends might add you to their network and until you add them to yours they will not have the ability to see your assets.

Excluding & Deleting Friends

If you do not want a friend in your network for whatever reason, you can either delete or exclude him or her. Excluding and deleting a friend from your friends list has a slightly but different effect:

  • Deleting: deleting a friend from your list, removes them from your direct friends list on CYNF but might not remove them from your friend network because they are likely to be a friend with others on your list and hence an indirect friend (for more information on "Indirect Friends" see Advanced View help ).

Deleting a friend is best used if you are tidying up your list and have friends that have not joined CYNF and have changed their e-mail address.

To delete a friend or friends from your "My Friends" list just tick the box next to their name/s and press the "Delete Selected".

  • Excluding: excluding a friend from your network is the best solution for totally removing a friend from your network. Think of exclusion as putting the friend at an infinate relationship distance from yourself.

To exclude a friend from your "My Friends" list using the "Distance From" drop-down box select "Excluded"

To see the "Excluded" List click on the link in the top right of the page labelled "View Excluded List". This will take you to the Exclusion list where you can re-instate your friend if you so choose.

For more information see Exclusion List help

Simple View

The "Simple View" of "My Friends" shows only the "Direct Friends" list and removes some of the complexity seen on this page.

To see this view click on the link labelled "Go to Simple View" on the top left of the page.
